Service Details
There are no limits on the number of users who may check out materials, so items are always available. However, each user may only have 10 titles at a time. When titles are checked out, they are available to the user for 21 days. At the end of the loan period, the file is disabled and can no longer be used. Titles cannot be "checked in" early, however, they may be renewed for an additional 21 days at any time. The State Library has purchased four core collections from Recorded Books, amounting to just over 1200 titles. Each month, 15 new titles are added to the core collection, and 15 older high interest titles are added from the Recorded Books backfile. In September of 2008, nearly 2000 more eaudiobook titles were added with the addition of the Blackstone US Collection. As with Recorded Books, 15-25 new titles will be added per month to the Blackstone collection. In late March of 2009, over 700 titles were changed to MP3 format, and may be used on any device that supports MP3. This includes iPods and iPhones. Look for the iPod or MP3 icon in the details view of items in Netlibrary. Patron Access/AuthenticationUsers must interact with the vendor's website to download files. Therefore, each user will have to create an account on the Netlibrary platform. Users will be able to create their accounts from within an authenticated site/building or from home once they have authenticated against the State Library proxy server. Libraries are encouraged to have patrons create accounts while physically in the library building, so that their account is then affiliated with their library. If they create their account by logging in from home, their account may be affiliated with the State Library proxy server. Can the Netlibrary service be used in libraries? Whether to allow downloading of large files to a computer in the library is a local issue. Considerations are bandwidth, computer availability, and staff time to provide assistance. Audio files should not be played on any library computers, as the digital rights license will then reside on the library's computer rather than the patron's portable device. However, files can be downloaded to a library's computer and then transferred directly to a user's device. For more information, please review the common questions for staff and end users on the OCLC Support site for Netlibrary (linked at left). I have a Macintosh computer and an iPod. Can I use this service? There are over 700 titles in our collection which are now in MP3 format which can be played on iPod and other devices that support the MP3 format. [iPod compatible titles]. The Netlibrary Media Center software (one click audio) is not compatible with Macintosh computers because of the version of Windows Media Player available for Macs. However, there is a workaround for downloading files from the Netlibrary website with a Mac. Park County Library has compiled a list of other sites for downloading free audio content.
