Outreach Programs

YMCA Kiddie Corral       Buffalo Children's Center        MOPS        Boys & Girls Club        Head Start

Reader's Theater is the most extensive outreach program provided by the Johnson County Library.  The Library Ladies have been going to schools in our county for 12 years and have also traveled to schools in other Wyoming communities to share the Reader's Theater experience.  Reader's Theater is a great way to share a great book with a child.

READ TO ME!

Reading aloud twenty minutes a day is the most important thing you can do to insure a child's mental growth and success in later life.  Good books encourage independent thinking, curiosity, language development, problem solving and the other necessary skills.

    HOW TO RAISE A READER

Half of your child's brain development happens before age four.  Children who are read to before school age are better readers.  These activities are designed to stimulate your baby's mind and prepare him or her to learn to read.  Talk to your baby.  Tell them what you're doing at bath time or when changing diapers.  Use your normal voice and words.  Babies understand more than you think.  Sing.  Try childhood favorites or make up your own.  Baby doesn't care if you have a good voice!  Read to your baby each day.  make it a habit before naps, bedtime or any quiet time.  Remember story hours at the library.  They help parents share books with their babies.  Make reading time "cuddle time".  Hold your baby in your arms, on your lap or sitting next to you.  Don't forget to tell your own stories.  It's never too early to share your experiences, family lore and values.  Your history is as important as what's in the books.

Summer Reading

This program is aimed at all children in Johnson County for the months of June and July.  The program is divided into three groups.  Preschool - Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-5.  The public library is the most influential institution in a child's summer learning.  Children who read for pleasure during the summer gain skills, rather that lose them.  As for preschoolers, these soon-to-be readers are absorbing words and concepts in the stories you read to them.  Every day counts!

Coming for SUMMER READING in 2009:
